New Mexico governor names Peter Mantos as new IT secretary

New Mexico has a new IT leader as the state embarks on expanding the state's broadband network with $123 million over three years. Peter Mantos most recently worked as a project manager at RESPEC, a data management company. He also held roles at Intel, Siemens and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. Colin Wood has more.

Michigan State University gets $10.5 million to expand statewide broadband

Michigan State University plans to work with a statewide high-performance computing network to build out the state's "middle mile" connections. The university was awarded $10.5 million from the NTIA on Monday. Middle mile infrastructure refers to connections between main fiber optic service lines and local providers. Emily Bamforth reports.

Google launches division dedicated to public sector

Google is doubling down in the public sector, launching a standalone division for federal, state and local government and education. The company has won major government contracts in recent years, but creating a new division for these offerings will give clients more options outside "legacy" cloud providers, Google Cloud's CEO told FedScoop. New York governor appoints state’s first ‘chief cyber officer’

Colin Ahern is the first New York state "chief cyber officer," overseeing the state's joint security operations center, launched earlier this year. The center is designed to offer services to local governments, as well as monitor infrastructure like state transit and power. Ahern, currently an associate professor at Columbia University, previously served as New York City's chief information security officer.   Colin explains.
