Sonia Angell steps down

California Public Health Director Sonia Angell resigned Sunday, just days after news that glitches in the electronic system the state uses to collect COVID-19 lab data was leading officials to share an overly optimistic picture of the state’s progress in fighting the pandemic. Neither Angell, Gov. Gavin Newsom nor other officials have explained her departure. Details also remain sparse about the faulty lab reporting system that led the state to undercount its COVID-19 cases. Newsom only told reporters Monday that "technology is always stubborn and a challenge.” Colin Wood has more.

NYC taps companies for data

Eleven technology companies, nonprofits and community organizations have joined a coalition to share their proprietary data — such as where people are visiting, shopping, eating and conducting real estate transactions — in an effort to help New York City officials better understand the needs of residents during the coronavirus pandemic. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the “NYC Recover Data Partnership” as a new way to corral data normally outside government's reach as the city seeks to help its neighborhoods recover from the pandemic. "As we recover from COVID-19 and build a fairer city, it's essential that we make decisions based in data, facts, and an understanding of the lived experiences of all New Yorkers," de Blasio said. Ryan Johnston explains how the program will work.

Developing a strong identity strategy to better serve citizens

An estimated 1 in 5 U.S. residents are served by a public assistance program and the pandemic has amplified citizen needs. Large-scale unemployment demands are pointing to an increased demand for other services over the coming months. According to a LexisNexis Risk Solutions report, state agencies should look to stronger authentication tools that certify citizen identity, proactively offer social service programs to those in need, and can help cut down on instances of fraud. Four 'Georgia Smart' winners

Clayton County, Georgia, and the cities of Sandy Springs, Valdosta and Savannah will receive $100,000 in grants, along with access to a network of researchers as an award for winning Georgia Institute of Technology’s Smart Communities Challenge. They'll use the resources to study street and sidewalk traffic patterns, optimize bus routes and examine how well municipal services are meeting the needs of their communities. Ryan has more on the projects.

Information as weapon

Millions of Americans who already struggle to keep pace with the daily barrage of news are now becoming accustomed to a threat known as weaponized misinformation. As Americans contend with fallout from the coronavirus pandemic and growing suspicion in societal institutions, false narratives have become attached to essentially every major news story. “A lot of people seem to be sincere believers in the content they’re spreading, even if it’s not real,” said University of Washington's Kate Starbird.
