Illinois CIO Ron Guerrier steps down

Illinois Chief Information Officer Ron Guerrier stepped down Friday after 18 months with the state government, Gov. J.B. Pritzker said. Guerrier, who was appointed in March 2019 after a long private-sector career that included stints as the CIO for Toyota and Farmers Insurance, received a competing offer from an unnamed organization. As state CIO, Guerrier brought what he called a "back to basics" approach that focused on broadband expansion, modernizing legacy infrastructure and promoting STEM education. Benjamin Freed reports.

The website provides information about self-driving pilots led by at least 17 cities, nine states and 10 companies. It shows how many vehicles are participating in each pilot, who their vendors are, whether the vehicles are being tested on public roads and if there’s a human operator in the car during testing. Ryan Johnston has details.

Mail-in ballots are easier than ever to track

The number of states and counties offering voters the ability to track absentee ballots as they’re on their way to be processed and counted has grown substantially this year as more states expand their use of mail-in voting in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Forty-five states and the District of Columbia host websites where people can look up the status of their ballots, and some even send voters automated text and email updates as their ballots are mailed out, received back and processed. Amber McReynolds, who runs the National Vote at Home Institute, said vote-tracking tools can be another security measure against misinformation and disinformation aimed at undermining the absentee system.
