Texas and Virginia CISOs embrace 'whole-of-state' cybersecurity

Government technology officials often refer to cybersecurity as a "team sport." But increasingly, more states are acknowledging that it takes more than cooperation between IT agencies and other bureaucrats to build a strong cybersecurity posture, also roping local governments, academia and the private sector into the conversation, to build what's known as a "whole-of-state" strategy, Texas CISO Nancy Rainosek and Virginia CISO Michael Watson said at a conference Tuesday. "Sharing begets sharing," Watson said. Benjamin Freed reports.

Election cyberattacks grow with each new candidate, Utah CIO says

Utah Chief Information Officer Mike Hussey says his state is coordinating and practicing for cyberattacks against election systems, which are escalating. “You want to make sure that you’re always one step ahead the best you can be and so we’re seeing a number of threats, especially as different candidates are coming into the race,” Hussey says in a video interview. “You can actually see that translate into the number of blocks at our front door based on those candidates coming into the race.” Watch the interview.

Seattle's smart-city coordinator leaving for civic-tech consulting group
