California's "Open Justice" project opens police data

Data collected during traffic and pedestrian stops by California's eight-largest law enforcement agencies is now available on a new online dashboard from the state's justice department. The dashboard, part of the California's "Open Justice" transparency initiative, visualizes who is stopped and what happens during these interactions — including if persons were let go with a warning or handcuffed and arrested — in order to give researchers, lawmakers and the public greater insight into how California's efforts to eliminate racial and identity profiling are progressing. Ryan Johnston reports.

The National States Geographic Information Council issued its first-ever set of report cards on how well state governments are incorporating geospatial information systems into other critical government functions, and the results aren't exactly worth bragging about. The 41 states that received grades all fell into the dismal-to-average band between C- and B+, with NSGIC's leaders saying that GIS programs need more funding to succeed, especially when it comes to next-generation 911 services and drawing election maps.
