FCC shares strategy for $20B rural broadband fund

The Federal Communications Commission announced Wednesday that it will split the disbursement of its $20.4 billion "Rural Digital Opportunity Fund" into two phases to mitigate the impact of incorrect coverage data it received from internet service providers in 2018. The first phase will distribute $16 billion to areas unserved by any broadband provider. The second phase will use a new mapping system designed to find underserved areas of the country that were incorrectly designated as served under the FCC’s old, inaccurate coverage data. Ryan Johnston reports.

Benjamin Freed reports.

The city's new Internet Master Plan seeks to use $2.1 billion worth of existing and new infrastructure to fill in those gaps, with the projection of tens of thousands of new jobs and billions more in new economic activity if the project bears out.
