North Carolina CIO to step down

North Carolina Chief Information Officer Tracy Doaks will step down July 31 to take over as president of the broadband advocacy nonprofit MCNC, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Wednesday. Doaks, who was appointed as the state’s deputy CIO in 2015 and took over the North Carolina Department of Information Technology's top job in February, was praised by Cooper for her role supporting the state’s COVID-19 response. The governor's office said Cooper will name a new CIO in the next few weeks. NYPD to reveal its snooping tools

The New York City Council yesterday voted overwhelmingly to approve the Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology, or POST, Act, a bill that will require the New York Police Department to publish a list and detailed descriptions of nearly all surveillance technologies it uses. With an annual budget of nearly $6 billion, the NYPD's toolbox is known to include facial recognition, license plate readers, aerial drones and even inconspicuously marked X-ray vans. The POST Act is the latest in a series of measures city leaders have taken to rein in the NYPD after weeks of protests inspired by the killing of Minneapolis resident George Floyd. 911 needs a lifeline

Despite the need for lawmakers to provide emergency relief during COVID-19 pandemic, they must not allow the health crisis to overshadow needs for overdue updates to the country’s aged 911 infrastructure, Brian Fontes, chief executive of the National Emergency Number Association, warned on Wednesday. Fontes said in a virtual conference that while he supports the need for additional pandemic relief from Congress, he’s concerned lawmakers will wrap up their current session without addressing his community's needs, like upgrades to next-generation 911 technologies capable of handling photo and video messages. “I think it’s tragic, absolutely tragic," he said. Virginia launches digital tools to aid communities' COVID-19 response

To support communities hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced last week he’s expanding two statewide data analysis platforms dedicated to helping people find jobs and helping municipalities understand where to allocate medical resources to slow the spread of COVID-19. The new Virginia Career Works Referral Portal and the Virginia Career Works Dashboard allow employers, job-seekers or students to easily post or find jobs according to their needs, as well as find skills-training opportunities and guidance on applying for unemployment benefits. “No longer are you required to go find people and make appointments and figure things out,” Virginia Chief Data Officer Carlos Rivero said.
