Election IT, one week out

While many of us are doomscrolling through poll results or nervously refreshing Electoral College forecasts, the IT and cybersecurity officials backstopping their states' election infrastructure sound calm, but not without caution, with one week to go. “The technical pieces are in place, the planning is in place,” said Jeff Franklin, the chief cybersecurity officer in the office of Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate. And after more than a year of preparation, Trevor Timmons, the CIO in the Colorado secretary of state's office, said approach to election security in 2020 is "180 degrees different" than four years ago. Denver's new data site to house COVID-19 data

A multiyear project to create a centralized, data-driven analytics hub in Denver will soon house the city’s COVID-19 data, marking the latest trend in data-driven initiatives spurred on by the health crisis. The coronavirus, Denver Chief Data Officer Paul Kresser said, "really brought to the forefront the importance of data and the city’s ability to leverage it quickly and in near-real time." It'll probably happen eventually

Government and industry cybersecurity officials said last week that for the public sector, being attacked with ransomware is practically an inevitability at this point. But there's plenty states and localities can do to defend themselves and mitigate incidents quickly. “Having an incident response plan is really important,” New Jersey CISO Michael Geraghty said during a CyberTalks panel. There’s lots of assets we can bring to the fight in terms of remediating." Ben has more.
