A new model for cloud security?

Similar to how the federal government vets cloud services for their security parameters when bidding on contracts, a group of state IT officials and vendors is attempting to build a similar program for state and local providers. The project, called StateRAMP, is modeled after FedRAMP, which offers a standardized approach to grading the security of federal vendors. The new effort grew out of conversations early last year between Joe Bielawski, president of Knowledge Services, a managed service provider, and Arizona CIO J.R. Sloan, who had already been implementing a localized FedRAMP-style program as his state pursues a cloud-first strategy. Benjamin Freed reports.

Grant programs in 2021?

NASCIO's annual list of federal legislative priorities includes a familiar call for a state and local cybersecurity grant program, as well as assistance in paying for much-needed modernization projects, especially as CIOs face the continued economic fallout of the pandemic. “The problem is a lot of states have not had the resources to provide funding to do the multi-year high-cost projects,” said Matt Pincus, NASCIO’s director of government affairs. The group is also looking for changes to cybersecurity regulations that affect audits of state systems, and changes to the FCC's broadband oversight. Ben has details.

Data-sharing is crucial to state pandemic response, officials say

The rapid transition to remote work that state and local governments have had to make during the coronavirus pandemic has opened up opportunities for making data-sharing and digital tools even easier to use, a group of state and university technology officials said Thursday. “Services are things we provide as government agencies, but outcomes are things that they experience,” Virginia Chief Data Officer Carlos Rivero said during Cloudera’s Data Cloud Summit, produced by FedScoop. Ryan has the story.

Resilience in education with cloud infrastructure

Microsoft’s Chris Bunio discusses how public schools and higher education organizations are using automation, AI and cloud tools to scale learning environments. He says that in a number of ways, there is a shift in the education system towards remote being a default, where institutions can actually extend the scale of learning, reach more students and have a more diverse faculty. Hear more from Bunio.
