Microsoft adds another one

Jeremy Goldberg, who spent more than a year as New York State’s interim chief information officer and also served as a key adviser to Gov. Andrew Cuomo during the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, announced last week that he’s joined Microsoft’s Worldwide Public Sector division. In an interview with StateScoop, Goldberg said his focus will be on helping governments around the world develop their digital infrastructure as they continue to grapple with the pandemic. He's also the third recently departed state IT leader to join Microsoft, following James Collins of Delaware and Yessica Jones of Arkansas, whom the tech giant hired last year. Benjamin Freed reports.

'Shielding' residents from vaccine headaches

Faced with hurdles in efficiently distributing COVID-19 vaccines, health and technology officials in one Illinois county are “shielding” residents and health care providers from the most complex logistical challenges in the process. Speaking during an online event, Jefferson McMillan-Wilhoit, the chief informatics and technology officer of the Lake County, Illinois, Health Department, is using two platforms designed with Salesforce to give residents and medical workers a more seamless, less technically challenging experience in signing up for and delivering vaccines. “If there are barriers,” he said, “people aren’t going to come get their vaccine, and staff won’t be effective at giving the vaccine.” Ryan has the story.

Biden's offer to states

In the approach to his swearing-in today, Joe Biden has said his first priority as president is to pass another major pandemic relief package, this time including aid to state and local governments that was left out of a December spending plan. The plan Biden outlined last week includes $350 billion in state and local aid, that officials are hoping can be used for a wide variety of programs, including IT agencies that are facing reduced spending models as governments continue to face economic downturns. Ben has details.

DHS nominee supports cyber grants

Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden's pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security, indicated during his Senate confirmation hearing yesterday that he'd be supportive of a new cybersecurity grant program for state and local government. "We have to recognize that there are local communities that don’t have the financial or other wherewithal to really safeguard their cyber assets and best protect against the threats that they confront," he told Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H. That likely comes as a welcome statement to NASCIO, which made a grant program one of its top legislative goals for 2021. See the rest of NASCIO's federal priorities.
