Oregon needs a better cyber plan

Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan published an audit Wednesday that calls for the state’s Enterprise Information Services division to improve its governance of cybersecurity across the state government, saying that it needs a “more detailed” IT security strategic plan with “measurable goals” for the state’s enterprise security program. State CIO Terence Woods said he agreed with Fagan's recommendations in spirit, but that his office is sometimes challenged by a “unique” arrangement in which cybersecurity is centralized under his office, while overall IT operations remain decentralized.   Colin Wood reports.

Get your iPhones out

Apple announced Wednesday that eight states, led by Arizona and Georgia, will begin offering digital versions of their driver’s licenses and identification cards compatible with the computing giant’s mobile devices. Residents of those states who own iPhones or Apple Watches will be able to upload their state-issued IDs to the Wallet app — which is also used to store airline tickets, credit cards, transit passes and movie and concert tickets — in those devices, the company said. Detroit partnership to study digital divide

A data science research unit within the University of Michigan is working with the City of Detroit to study where and why residents lack access to broadband or devices. The university’s Michigan Institute for Data Science, or MIDAS, announced earlier this month a yearlong, public-private research partnership with the City of Detroit and Microsoft, which will provide funding for the research. Ryan Johnston has more.
