A relief, but still chilly

A Missouri prosecutor said Friday that St. Louis Post-Dispatch journalist Josh Renaud, who was accused last year by Gov. Mike Parson of “hacking” the state government for reporting a website vulnerability, won’t face any criminal charges. Renaud last October found a flaw that exposed public-school employees' personal information, and despite going through the proper channels to disclose it, incurred the governor's wrath. In a statement, Renaud said Parson's "high-profile threats of legal retribution ... likely will have a chilling effect" on journalists and security researchers alike. Benjamin Freed has the latest.

Never too early for a tabletop

At the National Association of Counties' legislative conference last Friday, attendees ran through a tabletop simulation of what they’d do if an election in their jurisdiction was upended by a blizzard, power outage, phishing attack, ransomware or disinformation campaign — or some combination of those events. Kathy Boockvar, a former Pennsylvania secretary of the commonwealth who now leads the Center for Internet Security's election practice, said the exercise showed the importance of cross-sector collaboration. Auditor: Move faster on fraud

Kentucky Auditor Mike Harmon last week published a review that focused heavily on the cybersecurity and fraud-prevention shortcomings of the commonwealth’s unemployment insurance system. Harmon's report highlighted how Kentucky’s Office of Unemployment Insurance failed to implement measures that might have prevented millions of dollars in fraudulent payments, which are proving to be a lasting legacy of the pandemic.
