Tony Batalla's latest move

Longtime local government IT leader Tony Batalla, who spent eight years as CTO and innovation manager for the San Francisco Bay Area city of San Leandro, is moving to Oakland as its next CIO, city officials there announced last week. Batalla, who will start in the new role May 2, will lead an IT agency with 85 employees and a $37.5 million annual budget. He had left San Leandro earlier this year for a four-month stint as CIO of Santa Cruz County. Benjamin Freed reports.

California drafts broadband maps

The California Department of Technology on Friday released documents showing its recommended design for the $3.25 billion statewide broadband network Gov. Gavin Newsom approved last summer. The proposal outlines 8,700 new miles of “middle-mile” fiber optic cable to connect regions with poor internet access. It provides guidance on how to optimize routes of new fiber builds and recommends “joint build partnerships” to reduce costs. Colin Wood has details.

The zero-day records keep falling

Mandiant said last week that its intelligence division has documented a surge in verified zero-day exploits over the course of the last year, with 2021 accounting for 40% of zero-day attacks undertaken in the last decade. In all, the company identified 80 zero-days that were targeted "in the wild," more than double the previous record set in 2019, and also higher than a Google report last week that noted 58 zero-day exploits in 2021.
