DeWine's new cyber guy

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine this week named Kirk Herath, a former chief privacy officer at Nationwide Insurance, as his cybersecurity strategic adviser, a new position created to “prevent cyberattacks against state government.” Herath, who's also an adjunct professor at Ohio State University, had also been serving as chairman of CyberOhio, the state’s cybersecurity advisory board. Now they've got a plan

Nearly four months after a ransomware attack forced the closure of municipal buildings and prompted a local jail to lock down inmates, officials in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, this week approved their first governmentwide cybersecurity policy. County CIO Robert Benavidez said the policy is based on the NIST framework, and that the county has already implemented multi-factor authentication on nearly all employee accounts. CDC's data modernization remains largely unplanned

The CDC lacks a detailed Data Modernization Initiative framework due to projects’ complexity and COVID-19 response being a competing priority, according to a Government Accountability Office report released Wednesday. FedScoop's Dave Nyczepir reports that the CDC's many current disease monitoring systems are troubled by numerous problems, including a lack of common data standards from state and local sources.
