A new kind of information highway

The Port of Long Beach, California, is optimistic that a new data-sharing program called the Supply Chain Information Highway will help get goods moving through its terminals moving more quickly, the port's deputy executive director, Noel Hacegaba, told StateScoop this week. The platform, he said, is designed to give all of the entities operating at the port — shipping lines, terminals, trucking companies and freight railways — visibility into the movement of cargo. Big deal for VMware

Broadcom, a semiconductor and infrastructure software company, announced yesterday that it is acquiring VMware, the enterprise software firm, in an eye-popping $61 billion cash and stock deal. VMware is the global market leader in virtualization software, and a familiar name to pretty much every IT organization. Broadcom also plans to change its name to VMware once the deal closes. Ransomware in the suburbs

Officials in Somerset County, New Jersey, are continuing to deal with the fallout of a ransomware attack this week that knocked out the municipal email server, forcing local offices to set up backup Gmail accounts. The incident came as the clerk's office is sending out mail-in ballots ahead of New Jersey's June 7 primary, too. While voting-related IT systems were unaffected, the clerk's office said it can now only process ballot requests by phone or in person. Read more.
