How the cyber planning's going

When New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an executive order creating a cybersecurity planning committee, she didn't just form another ceremonial advisory board. It's also one of the major steps states are required to take as they apply for the new federal cybersecurity grant program. “Foremost is making sure we have the correct players at the table,” New Mexico CIO Peter Mantos said Thursday. “I do think in this executive order, we do indeed have the correct entities identified and we also have some flexibility for adding more people when they come up.” Benjamin Freed reports.

Former Google chairman Schmidt funds safety-net tech push

Former Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt and his wife, Wendy, announced last week the creation of a new program aimed at driving technological improvements in the delivery of government benefit programs. Schmidt Futures’ new Social Safety Net Product Studio grant program will distribute $13 million in grants to 12 companies and organizations that specialize in developing technologies meant to help needy people access benefits like nutrition assistance, rental support, Medicaid enrollment and other programs. Pittsburgh plans to close digital divide by 2027

The City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County announced this week they will develop a plan to close the digital dive in the region within five years. Speaking in Pittsburgh last Wednesday, Mayor Ed Gainey announced the formation of the Pittsburgh Digital Equity Coalition, which plans to publish a five-year plan next year. The digital equity plan targets providing reliable internet to all residents at an affordable price, as well as increasing access to devices, boosting digital literacy and providing more technical support to residents. Lindsay McKenzie has the story.
