Indiana universities to help local cyber assessments

The Indiana Office of Technology announced yesterday it’s partnering with the state’s two largest public universities to provide hundreds of cybersecurity assessments to local governments. The state technology bureau announced it will work with Purdue University and Indiana University to conduct “at least” 342 assessments of local governments’ cybersecurity over the next four years, state CIO Tracy Barnes told StateScoop. A 'crisis level' for states' cyber workforces

On the Priorities Podcast this week, NASCIO Policy and Research Director Meredith Ward and Deloitte’s Srini Subramanian discuss what they found in their biennial survey of state CISOs, which was published last week during the association's annual conference. The survey focused on states' growing struggles to hire and keep cybersecurity talent. “The workforce issue has really reached a crisis level with cybersecurity workforce in state government,” Ward tells StateScoop Managing Editor Benjamin Freed. “Competing for salaries, trying to retain folks when there’s other opportunities has been a real challenge.” Listen to the podcast.

There's a new tech chief in Sacramento

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday named Suzanne Changus, formerly the chief information officer of the California Prison Industry Authority, as the new statewide chief technology officer. Changus fills a role that was most recently held by Liana Bailey-Crimmins, whom Newsom earlier this year appointed as state CIO. As chief technology officer, Changus reports to Bailey-Crimmins and heads the operational side of the state’s technology practices, which range from developing enterprise IT platforms to supplying informational websites to the public.
