State CIO group announces finalists for IT awards
North Carolina’s Innovation Center and Minnesota’s online permitting system were among the 44 initiatives selected as finalists for the National Association of State Chief Information Officers’ annual State IT Recognition Awards.
Eligible projects and initiatives came from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. The finalists were selected by the NASCIO Awards Committee from a field of more than 100 nominees, according to a release from the association. Four different projects were recognized in 11 different categories. One winner per category will be announced at the association’s annual conference in Salt Lake City in October.
Virginia leads the field with five initiatives recognized as finalists. Pennsylvania was recognized with four, while Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Washington received three finalist spots.
Last year, NASCIO recognized Oregon, North Carolina, Washington, New Mexico, Georgia, California, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Texas with awards at its annual conference in Nashville.
The finalists for this year’s awards, broken down by category, are:

- Missouri — Geosciences Technical Resource Assessment Tool (GeoSTRAT)
- Virginia — Enhancing customer service through the mobile collectors application
- Arkansas — A mobile filing system that enables citizens to receive 172 percent more unclaimed property
- Minnesota — MPARS Permitting and Reporting System
- Virginia — Electronic death registration and birth certificates on demand
- Washington state — Customer-focused service enhancements to online tax filing system
