Amazon to build $1 billion cloud center in Ohio
Ohio Governor John Kasich confirmed Amazon Web Services has committed to building a $1.1 billion cloud computing data center in the state.
The location of the new data center still has not been established, but the cities of Dublin and Hilliard both submitted comprehensive proposals to win the project, according to DatacenterDynamics.
AWS has not commented on Kasich’s statement. The governor’s statement follows reports that the Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved tax incentives for Vadata, an AWS subsidiary, worth an estimated $81 million. The governor confirmed the decision during a campaign stop, according to The Columbus Dispatch, when he was asked whether the data center project was coming to Ohio. “They’ve already committed,” he said.
According to reports, Dublin and Hillard are offering sizable incentives, with Dublin offering Amazon 68 acres of land worth $6.8 million plus local road and water improvements, while Hilliard promised a 15 year, 100 percent real-estate tax abatement valued at $5.4 million, wage-tax rebates and fee waivers for permits. The project is expected to create 120 jobs.
AWS runs 11 cloud computing regions from its data centers worldwide, including four in the U.S..
