State Leadership of the Year

Public health agencies got leaned on hard in 2020, and they braced with technology. Tony McGaughey, CIO at Georgia’s Department of Public Health, faced unrelenting IT demands. He stood firm, relying on deep-rooted supply lines and vendor partners to anchor innovative solutions. Leveraging channels in the state’s IT shared services program, he outfitted more than 2,000 new contact tracers with laptops, in the midst of short supply. McGaughey helped mobilize an online system to facilitate COVID-19 testing (scheduling and results reporting) and then enhanced it with Spanish language capability. He also facilitated quick server additions when computing demand exploded.
