Startup incubator opens applications for mentoring program
An accelerator program is offering smart-city-focused startups the chance to receive seed funding and mentoring services to build their businesses.
The Urban-X Cohort 2 Accelerator Program just opened a new round of applications to provide fledgling businesses with $60,000 in seed capital investment and a 14-week, hands-on mentoring program.
“Urban-X is looking for pre-seed startups, founders, and risk-takers working on technology for intelligent cities, urban hyper-growth, and society-scale challenges,” according to an e-newsletter from the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Global City Team Challenge.
During the program, the selected startups will work within Urban-X’s innovation lab in Brooklyn, where in-house designers and engineers will help them develop their product. They’ll receive access to software legal services, and have the opportunity visit the workspace of the automobile company Mini in Munich and the hardware investment company HAX in China – the two program sponsors.
The Global City Teams Challenge, a NIST-supported initiative to develop new Internet of Things technologies cities can use, is also working closely with the program, according to an email newsletter from the competition.

This is the second Urban-X cohort. Last year, the company selected nine teams, including a company developing a charging infrastructure for commercial drones and another creating a special analytics platform.
Applicants must fill out a 17-question application by Sept. 6, and include descriptions of their company and a short video pitch. The program begins this fall.
