California awards SAIC contract for FirstNet services

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services has awarded a contract to provide support services for the implementation of FirstNet, the nationwide wireless, high-speed, broadband network designed to facilitate communications between emergency workers during crisis.

The two-year contract, valued at $440,000, is with Virginia-based SAIC.

SAIC will provide support services in various locations in California that include educational materials and outreach for public safety broadband as well as presentations, town meetings, and webinars regarding FirstNet legislation. Furthermore, SAIC will also engage and coordinate activities with other community stakeholders.

FirstNet was signed into law through the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Program in 2012.

It was one of the recommendations from the 9/11 Commission to provide a more effective system of communication among government personnel to respond to emergency situations.

The system will use the 700 MHz spectrum and eventually serve as an interoperable platform to facilitate communications between emergency and public safety personnel across the United States.
