L.A. students crack issued iPads

This year the Los Angeles school district issued iPads to all 640,000 students in its district, but only a week into the program and problems are already emerging.

Engadget reports that 300 students at Theodore Roosevelt High School worked around the privacy settings in the tablets to give themselves access to previously blocked programs like Facebook, Twitter and other banned apps.

According to the report, students bypassed a security lock on the tablets by deleting a personal profile that was preloaded in the settings.

As a result, the school district police chief recommended that the school’s board limit the $1 billion rollout of the technology before it turns into a “runaway train scenario.”

In the meantime, officials have banned home use of the iPads while they figure out a better way to restrict access.
